To be honest I actually see the woman's point of view, if things were taken serious enough, this can be considered as 'cheating' in real life. Relationships aren't always about sex.

The man thinks the online relationship is more suitable than his current relationship, most likely, and thus aligns himself with his online partner and trys to establish a connection, usually females seek an emotional relationship while men tend to establish a short-term relationship or perceives it as an extra additional supplement to his life. While the internet giving a seemingly promising fantasy to another entirely different level with this anonymity as opposed to the work required in real life in order to be intimate.
