By server load, i take it you mean processing/CPU load? Or are we talking I/O?

running diagnostics on the server, it's almost all CPU used by httpd. I had our sr. unix admin at work take a look at it too - he was surprised it was still serving requests lol..

Have you installed e-accelerator package for PHP scripts?
I haven't experiences big loads like this, however I do know PHP scripts takes a lot of CPU, e-accelerator is like a compile cache for PHP, which means PHP scripts are compiled once - making execution times faster
without e-accelerator
Code:
Generated in 0.1239631 seconds (86.98% PHP / 13.02% MySQL)
MySQL Queries: 11 / Global Parsing Time: 0.0899701 / Memory Usage: 3.21 MB
PHP version: 5.2.6-pl2-gentoo / Server Load: 1.42 / GZip Compression: Enabled
with e-accelerator
Code:
Generated in 0.0549800 seconds (70.32% PHP / 29.68% MySQL)
MySQL Queries: 11 / Global Parsing Time: 0.0332551 / Memory Usage: 799.5 KB
PHP version: 5.2.6-pl2-gentoo / Server Load: 1.58 / GZip Compression: Enabled

@Crypt, I'll look into that. I did install memcached and that has seemed to have an impact on the wiki performance, but I don't have the forums utilizing it. I don't have enough RAM on the box; I didn't expect to be running into this problem for another 5 months.
Update on Server Status
Things didn't work out as well as I had wished. Most places that I could find start co-location packages at half a rack, and we have neither the traffic nor money to warrant something like that. Half a rack would cost us somewhere between $1500 and $2000 per month. Yes, I could have searched for more host solutions, but the provider we have has outstanding service, reasonable prices, and a rather massive pipe to the internet. In fact, our unix admin at my real job was shocked when I told him that we had a 100 mbit/s to the internet when our company's production webserver has only 6 mbit/s.
So, that isn't gonna work, but we still have the issue of our current server being insufficient. Instead of buying a box and shipping it to someone, I'm going to upgrade to another leased box. The current box is a single processor, dual core Xeon 1.8 GHz. The new box will be a dual processor, quad core 2.0 GHz. This should last us some time.
I'm not going to stop the donation drive; if we hit that goal then we have amassed 10 months of operating costs. You've all had access to our monthly expense/donation report, so the money is still going to MMOG.
Sorry to get everyone's hopes up that we'd own our server - but it really is seeming cheaper to just lease them. Maybe if we start pulling 1 million+ visitors a day and need to get multiple webservers with load balancing, it would make more sense.

Okay so what I understand is if you got half-rack then you would need to upgrade the internet service and it would cost $1500-2000 per month from your current provider. And you are too busy to look for another provider?

I stated my reasons for wanting to stay with our current provider in the post above.

I saw that, but you are acting like this provider is the best thing that ever happened to the Internet.
If you look hard enough, perhaps there is something better out there that can support half-rack. I wouldn't kill your chances so soon, because you haven't even tried.

Decision in where I choose to host the site are not a democratic vote. Sorry to sound blunt, but it's really annoying to post every aspect of every decision I make regarding hosting and finances.
As stated before, I release public information about where this site's money goes. That should be good enough.
Also, please keep in mind - that while the site's donations have been significant so far, I've still dropped $900 of my own into this because they do not cover operating costs. I'd like to minimize the impact of any server moves to my own pocketbook.

Status updated. Donations have sunk to almost 0, so I wanted until I had like $20 to update it with. At this rate we won't make the goal, but I plan to launch the new server on September 1st anyway. Hopefully ads will catch up soon, heh...
